TOURING TROPHIES

Touring advice can be obtained from a number of BSCA officers including Noel Henderson our President.

He can be contacted by writing to him at 29 Campion Drive, Guisborough, Cleveland TS14 8EU

Although the majority of BSCA cups and shields are awarded to racing teams in the various National Championships, members can compete for Tourist Trophies (4):

YHA Touring Trophy

Purchased partly out of a generous donation from the Youth Hostels Association.  The Rules appear further down this page.

CTC Trophy

Kindly provided by the Cyclists' Touring Club. This is awarded annually to the individual member who has been on the most enterprising tour of the school year.  It need not necessarily involve youth hostelling, and emphasis is on the initiative and interest rather than the mileage covered.  Application forms are available from the General Secretary and should be returned by 30th September in the year to which the application relates.  Judges are the BSCA Touring Committee.

Oval Trophy

Presented by the Oval CC and awarded to the individual points winner in the BSCA Tourist Trials, which involve map-reading and reliability trials.  The Oval Trophy is currently being incorporated in the CTC's British Cycle Tourist Competition.  Members are reminded that this competition (BCTC) is open to all cyclists and not just members of the CTC.  A list of rules, can be obtained from the CTC around February or March by sending a SAE.

Ordnance Survey Touring Trophy

To be awarded to the school which has made the greatest contribution to the development of touring during the school year.  This will include the present YHA Trophy, CTC Trophy, Oval Trophy, Ron Kitching Awards, Merit Award Scheme, Duke of Edinburgh Awards and other concepts linked with cycle touring.

Further details of this trophy can be obtained form the General Secretary.  Please send a large SAE for your information pack.

YHA TOURING TROPHY RULES

1.       The YHA Touring Trophy shall be awarded annually to the member school gaining the greatest number of points on the following basis:

(a)    Each Youth Hostel bednight recorded by a pupil while travelling by cycle shall score one point.  (e.g.: 8 pupils on a week's tour of 6 bednights score 48 points between them).

(b)    Provided that prior permission is obtained from the General Secretary, nights spent camping or at accommodation other than Youth Hostels, may be counted at the same rate, subject to a maximum number of two such nights in succession for a pupil or party.

(c)    Bednights recorded by teachers and student-teachers shall not score points, but senior pupils acting as leaders or assistant leaders may score points even when they are in sole charge of the party.

2.     For points calculation, the year shall run from 1st September to 31st August inclusive.  If a tour should overlap this division, the whole tour shall count all its points in that year in which the greater number of bednights were recorded.  No bednights may be counted for both years.

3.     The onus for applying for the Award shall rest with the BSCA Correspondent, who shall forward all details to the General Secretary not later than the 30th September in the year to which the award relates.  The BSCA Correspondent shall sign a statement to the effect that he is satisfied with the accuracy of the statistics given.

4.     The General Secretary shall have the right to ask an BSCA Correspondent for further details in the case of leading contenders for the Trophy, including the forwarding of YHA cards.  He may at his discretion refer to the Executive Committee for a decision.
