
BSCA
have developed a range of cycling awards designed specifically for young
cyclists from the very early stages to advanced levels of competition. We also
encourage our members to work towards the awards of the senior governing
bodies and details of these are included within this simple guide.

1.
Ride and stop |
Ride
a short distance and stop safely with brakes and no skidding |

2.
Ride a straight line |
Ride
to a straight line of 15 metres without deviating more than 75mm
from the line |
|
3.
Park Bike |
Park
bike safely against a wall or similar, in a safe position with
regard to traffic and pedestrians |
|
4.
Right/Left circles |
Riding
to a line in circles both clockwise and anti clockwise |
|
5.
One hand |
Riding
with one hand for a distance of 10 m whilst maintaining control.

6.
Gear changing |
Gear
change on command, up or down one gear at a time when instructed |
These
6 skills are all needed prior to participation in the traditional Road Safety
training courses (promoted and run by Road Safety departments and ROSPA)
and can be set up in a fun environment for young children to practice in
a playground or youth club environment.
Simple games and ramps/seesaws can be introduced to improve the cycle
control and balance. The skills
7—9 can be used to introduce an
element of fun and competition to the cycling activity.

bike and run forwards for a minimum of 15 metres under control |
