The mighty horses that performed the heavy work on the farm as well as between towns and in city streets, had a comparatively short period of dominance.

They reached the height of their power in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but in the 1920/30s, with the arrival of the tractor and the lorry, they came near to extinction. Now, however there has been a great revival of interest in these ‘gentle giants’.

The British Shire & Clydesdale Association (BSCA) provides well-researched and historical information for all those who admire the power, prowess and majesty of the heavy horse, and who wish to know about its past and how its role is now being re-assessed.
